Burnout Isn't Just Being Tired

Many people think burnout is simply exhaustion.

It's not.

Burnout is what happens when stress goes unaddressed for too long.

It's the feeling of running on empty while continuing to push forward because you don't know another way.

You may still be functioning. You may still be meeting deadlines, showing up for others, and checking all the boxes. From the outside, everything may look fine.

Inside, however, you feel disconnected.

Disconnected from your energy.

Disconnected from your purpose.

Disconnected from the version of yourself you remember being.

I've experienced burnout personally, and one of the hardest parts wasn't the exhaustion. It was the feeling that I couldn't talk about it. I worried about what others would think. I worried that slowing down would somehow mean I had failed.

Many people carry those same fears.

They continue pushing until their body, relationships, motivation, or emotional wellbeing force them to pay attention.

Burnout recovery isn't about becoming more productive.

It's about becoming more connected.

Connected to your needs.

Connected to your values.

Connected to the reality that your worth is not measured by how much you accomplish.

If you've been feeling exhausted, cynical, emotionally depleted, or like you've lost touch with what lights you up, it may be time to pause and ask yourself a different question.

Not "How do I keep going?"

But "What do I need right now?"
