In today’s modern world where isolation is prevalent and communication is often through screens, the healing effects of touch are more critical than ever.  Our lack of touch can result in a range of negative consequences for all age groups. A recent study focusing on adolescents struggling with emotional issues like depression and anxiety, difficulty building relationships, and physical health problems, massage was shown to be a healthy addition to their healing and self-care.

In a study conducted at the University of Gothenburg on young people aged 15-17 years with a diagnosis of ADHD, the participants were offered a massage once of week for 10 weeks.

Participants and their caregivers were asked to rate mood and symptoms of ADHD before, during and after receiving massage therapy treatment. These results showed that hyperactivity, impulsive behaviors, and attention deficits were clearly reduced, along with a noted reduction in irritation and defiance. Even more remarkable is that 3 months post-treatment, these positive effects seemed to remain, as well as a marked improvement in sleep patterns. This was especially noted on the night they received their massage.

This study suggests a need to circle back to the simple things in life that have profound effects on our state of being. In a separate study, researchers focused on the negative effects of hearing our phone notifications constantly. The data proved that the seemingly innocuous “ding” of our devices plays a significant role in our perpetual state of “fight or flight.” By simply turning notifications off and connecting back to ourselves, we can lower stress hormones, come back into a state of balance, and remember our divinity.

We are not machines, and we’re not meant to be controlled by our devices. The healing power of connection and touch, paired with drinking pure water, getting good sleep, remembering to slow down our breath and simply be present, can remind us that we are more brilliant than any machine ever made. You deserve the best care, and here at Symmetry and Balance Wellness Hub, we are honored to be a part of your journey to true wellness.
