Roots in Action: What is the Community Membership and why did we change it?

For a long time, our membership followed the traditional wellness model:
Pay a monthly fee.
Receive a specific service.
Get a discount for committing to come regularly.
Repeat until you realize you have three unused massages,
no open Saturdays, and a stress knot that has developed its own stress knot.
That model works beautifully for some people.
But it does not work for everyone—
and we want our roots to be accessible to every client.
Some people need massage every month. Others rotate between massage, coaching, Reiki, movement, workshops, and community events. Some need frequent support during an especially difficult season. Others need less hands-on care when life settles down and their nervous system is no longer behaving like a raccoon trapped in a recycling bin.
Some people deeply want to belong to a healing community but cannot commit to purchasing a full service every single month.
We realized that if our membership was tied to one required monthly service, we were not truly building community.
We had created an appointment package wearing a cute membership hat.
So we changed it.
From a Service Plan to a Community Root
Our Roots Membership is now $30 per month.
You are no longer paying each month for a massage you may or may not need. Instead, you receive straightforward savings, flexible benefits, special opportunities, and a real place in the community we are growing.
You are choosing to become a root.
Yes, that metaphor is going to continue throughout this entire blog. We have committed to the tree. There is no turning back now.
What Do Roots Members Actually Receive?
Roots members receive:
15% off every service
No additional charges for available service upgrades and add-ons
Priority invitations to workshops, trainings, and special events
Exclusive invitations to member retreats—with opportunities to bring a guest
Access to members-only programs and community experiences
A flexible, month-to-month membership
A direct role in helping us build a stronger, more sustainable clinic
This is not a vague “good vibes and an occasional newsletter” membership.
It provides real financial value every time you receive care—and it gives us the ability to create more ways for you to access support beyond the treatment room.
Is It Actually Worth $30?
Yes. The math is pleasantly undramatic.
With 15% off:
A $125 service saves you $18.75
A $140 service saves you $21
A $165 service saves you $24.75
A $180 service saves you $27
For many clients, one 90-minute appointment nearly covers the entire cost of that month’s membership through the discount alone.
If you receive more than one service in a month, book a longer session, attend a member opportunity, or use included upgrades, the value grows very quickly.
In other words, the membership can almost pay for itself before we even get to the workshops, retreats, programs, priority invitations, free upgrades, and the warm fuzzy feeling of helping your favorite slightly chaotic wellness clinic continue existing.
And because the membership is not tied to one particular service, you can use your discount on the care that makes sense for you.
Massage this month. Reiki next month. Coaching when life gets weird. A workshop when you need connection. Whatever helps your nervous system stop sending emails marked URGENT at 3:00 a.m.
Why Straight-Up Savings?
Because your care should be based on what your body and life actually need—not on what happens to be included in a package.
A simple discount gives you freedom:
Choose the service that supports you right now.
See the practitioner who best fits your needs.
Come more often during difficult seasons.
Come less often when things are steady.
Explore workshops, programs, and new forms of support.
Remain part of the community even when a full monthly service is not financially or physically realistic.
There is no unused service hanging over your head.
There is no forcing yourself to book something simply because you already paid for it.
There is no feeling like you cannot belong because a traditional massage membership is outside your budget.
There is just flexible support, meaningful savings, and a place to put down roots.
Look at us, getting to the root of the problem.
What Does “Community Building” Actually Mean?
We do not want “community” to be one of those lovely words businesses place on a
poster and then never explain.
To us, community building means creating more opportunities for people to receive support—even when they are not lying on a massage table.
It means developing things like:
Educational workshops
Book clubs and meaningful conversations
Reiki shares and healing-the-healer nights
Movement and walking or running groups
Creative programs and art nights
Programs for burnout, balance, and nervous-system support
Member gatherings and retreats
Opportunities for adults, parents, teens, and children to feel connected
Spaces where people can meet one another before life becomes a full-blown dumpster fire
Your membership helps us move these ideas from “Wouldn’t that be amazing?” to “Here is the date—come join us.”
That is why we call it Roots in Action.
Your membership does not sit quietly in a bank account wearing a name tag. It helps us hire, plan, teach, create, gather, and keep making care more accessible.
Roots Support the Whole Tree
Small wellness businesses are usually expected to survive entirely on appointments.
That means the clinic’s stability depends on how many services our practitioners can physically perform every day. It leaves the entire business vulnerable to cancellations, injuries, illness, economic changes, and the unfortunate fact that massage therapists do not come with interchangeable robot arms.
Believe me.
I checked.
We do not want the future of this clinic to depend on running our practitioners into the ground. That would be a particularly bad way to care for people.
We want to build something steadier: a practitioner-owned clinic supported by a large community of people contributing a manageable amount.
When many people become roots, no single person has to hold up the whole tree.
Your $30 helps us:
Retain talented practitioners
Protect our team from burnout
Create new programs and events
Offer lower-cost and community-based opportunities
Improve the experience our clients receive
Remain stable during difficult seasons
Continue creating care that treats people like humans, not appointment slots
Your membership gives back to you through discounts and benefits, but it also gives us the stability to continue showing up for the entire community.
Roots protect the tree—and a healthy tree can keep providing shelter.
Also, without healthy roots, trees fall over.
That is science, marketing, and a mildly threatening metaphor all at once.
A Root That Is Accessible to Every Client
You do not have to be our most frequent client.
You do not have to book the most expensive service.
You do not have to come every week, every month, or on a perfectly predictable schedule.
You do not have to prove that you “use it enough” to belong here.
You can become a root because you value the care you receive. Because you want access to savings and special opportunities. Because you believe people deserve support before they completely fall apart. Because you want local, practitioner-owned wellness care to survive and grow.
Or because you enjoy discounts, retreats, free upgrades, and being included in fun things.
We support both the sentimental and financially practical branches of this decision tree.
This Is Bigger Than a Discount—But the Discount Is Still Really Good
We changed the membership because we wanted it to be more flexible, more inclusive, and more useful.
We wanted a membership that could support someone who comes twice a month and someone who comes a few times a year.
We wanted people to choose their care instead of being locked into one service.
We wanted the monthly cost to be accessible.
We wanted the benefits to provide real value.
Most importantly, we wanted every membership to help build something that appointments alone cannot create: a connected, resilient community centered around care.
This is not a traditional membership anymore.
It is a shared investment in your own wellness, your care team, and the future of our community.
It is affordable enough for many people to join, valuable enough to make practical sense, and powerful enough to help protect an entire clinic when hundreds of roots grow together.
One root is small. Hundreds of roots can hold up an entire tree.
Become a root.
Save money.
Access more.
Help us build something beautiful.
And please enjoy telling everyone that
you are now an official member of our underground support network.
Technically, all roots are underground.
I do not make the rules.
