Why We Pair Bodywork with Coaching

The dumpster fire is a joke. Taking care of the human is serious.

Our “How on Fire Is Your Nervous System?” quiz comes with flaming dumpsters and a completely scientific-ish attitude. Behind the humor is a very intentional choice: our care packages combine specialized licensed massage therapists with a coach. Because helping someone pay attention to their body also means taking seriously what they might notice.

There may be no bear but the pressure is real

The inbox. The bills. The news. The people who need you. The cultural expectation that you should handle all of it, remain pleasant, and somehow meal-prep.

For many of us, there is no bear in the room. There are real demands that keep arriving without a clear finish line. Stress can affect both mind and body, and anxiety can persist even without an immediate threat.[1] A quiet room does not automatically make someone feel safe.

That does not mean the problem is all in your head. Financial insecurity, grief, discrimination, illness, and unsafe relationships are real. Our thoughts can add to the pressure, but individual coping skills cannot erase every condition creating it. You deserve support with both your experience and your circumstances.

Sometimes slowing down means noticing more

Somatic work means paying attention to bodily experience: sensations, movement, tension, or breathing. Sometimes that feels soothing. Sometimes slowing down gives you room to notice sadness, anger, fear, or exhaustion that had been difficult to hear over the noise of getting through the day.

Relaxation practices can occasionally increase anxiety or intrusive thoughts, and some can worsen symptoms for people with a history of trauma.[2] That is a reason to approach this work thoughtfully, with choice and support.

Regulation practices are not all designed to bring buried material to the surface. An emotional reaction does not prove that trauma is leaving your tissues, and a session does not need tears or a dramatic “release” to be valuable. Feeling worse is not a requirement for getting better.

You do not have to push through

If something becomes overwhelming, the response should be to slow down, adjust, or stop. You can ask for different pressure, keep your eyes open, decline an exercise, or end a session. You do not owe anyone your story to have your boundaries respected.

Why a coach belongs in the care plan

Our coach brings prior experience as a licensed therapist to her current coaching role. That background informs why we take emotional support, appropriate pacing, and knowing when to connect someone with additional care seriously. Coaching in this program is not psychotherapy or treatment for a mental health disorder.

Coaching gives you a place to talk about what you are noticing, practice manageable coping skills, explore boundaries, and think through what support would help between appointments. Sometimes the useful next step is a smaller practice. Sometimes it is help finding a licensed mental health professional or a community resource.

When we say we want you to feel held, we mean listened to, treated with respect, and supported in making choices. We cannot guarantee that difficult feelings will never arise. We can make space for a conversation about what you need instead of treating distress as an achievement.

Different roles with a shared purpose

Our specialized LMTs focus on bodywork within their professional scope, adapting touch and pressure with your feedback. Our coach supports reflection, everyday skills, and connections to resources within her coaching role. Neither role replaces medical evaluation or licensed mental health treatment when that is what you need.

Persistent or worsening distress deserves attention from a qualified health professional.[1] You do not have to finish a package or try harder at relaxation before seeking that help. Additional care can be part of the plan.

Maybe the next American dream includes an exhale

With prices skyrocketing and stress that lives in our heads more than lions, tigers, bears and harvesting, our nervous systems are under constant threat but with no way to really do anything to fix it, that's new. This is a different kind of existing than the human brain has been asked to do before. Without rest we repress. Without the feeling of safety, we are always on guard.

We would like to be part of a movement where being successful also includes having enough room to rest, ask for help, and feel at home in your body. Where needing support does not mean you have failed at adulthood. Where care can be something you plan for before everything catches fire.

That is the intention behind our Tune-Up, Maintenance, and Rebuild packages: repeated opportunities for bodywork, paired with coaching to support what happens between visits. The names are playful. They are not diagnoses or promises to repair a nervous system on a deadline.

If you want to work with Kjersten regularly, reach out so we can plan a recurring appointment rhythm around current availability. Consistent care starts now when we have reached the first time in the history of Symmetry and Balance, we have ever had a full team, so as long as Kjersten doesn't fall off of anything else this year, we should be golden.

Start with the dumpster

Visit our Gifts page and scroll beneath the packages to take “How on Fire Is Your Nervous System?” Are we talking Flicker, Dumpster Fire, or Everything’s Fine?

The quiz is a humorous reflection tool, not a validated assessment or diagnosis. Use it to start a conversation. Then let’s talk about what kind of support fits your actual life.

You deserve care that takes you seriously—even when the marketing involves a flaming trash receptacle.
